Argentine filmmaker Gustavo Postiglione’s La peli is the third part in the trilogy he started with El asadito (2000), and then continued with El cumple (2002). The first thing that springs to mind is that, in aesthetic and narrative terms, La peli basically has nothing to do with neither El asadito nor El cumple.
For starters, there are many possible films in La peli: there’s the story of Diego, the megalomaniac film director; the love story between Diego and Ana; the story of Diego’s mental and emotional breakdown and his tour de force not to go nuts…plus the story of a film being shot within a film; the possible different films to be made from a single story; and the homage Postiglione pays to good old classics such as Fellini’s 8 ½ or Truffaut’s Day for Night – just to cite two examples. Not all the possible films in La Peli function smoothly. Not all of them make sense all the time. Not all of them are as compelling as they seem at first glance. Yet, there are at least two traits that make Postiglione’s third part of his trilogy not only a film worth seeing, but also an auteur film, like El asadito and El cumple, but different.
First, although far from perfect, its narrative dares to go to new places, visit unfamiliar scenarios, and is unafraid to take risks, even if, at times, that means verging on the ridicule. Granted, whether the above is a virtue is also debatable, but one thing is for sure: when a film director is so convinced of the film he or she wants to make, follows his or her personal vision - even at the expense of a more well rounded final result - and, above all, he or she ends up achieving most of the film’s premises, then something has certainly been done right. Such is the case of Postiglione. For there’s no hidden agenda here. What you see is what you get. For better or for worse, this is definitively not a tepid film. On the contrary.
Secondly, there’s its deeply unapologetically sentimental nature, even to the point of being corny, but, at the same time, it’s utterly honest and authentic – there’s no beating around the bush here. Sentimental it is, all right. Like in a melodrama – though this no melodrama – feelings, visceral sentiments are what really prevail, what make characters do what they do at the expense of what they should do or are expected to do. This is not about intellectualizing and rationalizing. Instead, it’s about feeling. And at a time in when there seems to be certain demure - even reluctance - in portraying elementary expressions of profound love (including its almost immediate loss and subsequent realization of the value of what was lost) Postiglione’s La Peli is a refreshing, vital, and passionate quest for recovering the capacity to get lost in the turmoil or romantic obsession.
That said, it’s only fair to point out that La peli suffers from some problems that could have been avoided: it’s a bit overlong; it’s excessive and even redundant when it comes to stylistic flourishes; it’s somehow arbitrary in its use of color and black and white; and, at times, it’s too self explanatory. In short: a bit self indulgent, if you will. Like its characters, it’s a film that tends to go to the extremes, which not always works quite right.
On the other hand, Postiglione’s decision to cast three different actors (Resta, Briski, and Grandinetti) for the same role, each one playing Diego according to different phases in his life, it’s not only well executed but it also shows the director firm hand when it comes to coaching his actors in order to have them deliver homogenous performances – something that extends to all the other performances, including that of TV star Natalia Oreiro, as finely tuned as you never though she could be. Let alone the convincing and most candid film debut of local film critic Diego Lerer from Clarín daily as…himself.

chau

Estimado Gustavo:
